Lin Yang, Uoffer Global
Introduce yourself in three words or phrases.
Adaptable. Opportunity-driven. Connector.
What do you like most about your job?
This role has enabled me to develop key skills in market analysis, strategic planning, and international collaboration within the higher education sector.
A key strength I have built is the ability to anticipate market changes. For example, identifying early opportunities for increased TNE collaboration between Chinese and international universities has enhanced my analytical and decision-making abilities.
Having worked in international higher education for more than 10 years, I improved data analysis, relationship management and adaptability skills. I have improved my capacity to lead meaningful collaborations that are advantageous to both institutions and students, while ensuring effective contributions to the sector’s sustainable growth.
Best work trip/worst work trip?
It was in September, 2024 that I travelled from China to the UK for Uoffer Global’s event in Birmingham, bringing together top academics and industry leaders to discuss AI, digital transformation, and the future of international education. The event kicked off with a welcome from councillor Ken Wood, Lord Mayor of Birmingham, followed by a powerful session with Lord Jo Johnson on empowering international students.
The next day, I attended a scholarship signing ceremony at Oxford Saïd, launching the Uoffer Global MBA scholarship for Chinese students at the Saïd Business School at the University of Oxford. We’re proud to support future leaders through this initiative!
If you could learn a language instantly, which would you pick and why?
SQL (Structured Query Language).
Having SQL skills would allow me to analyse cross-border education data, offering better insights into trends and providing international partnership real-time data solutions.
What makes you get up in the morning?
Every day, I wake up with a purpose. I’m driven by the constant possibility of innovating and engaging in the world of global education.
In this industry, there’s always some new initiative, collaboration, or trend to explore. Whether it’s moving the TNE program innovation further or facilitating knowledge sharing among institutions across the border, I know that every single decision I take has the ability to influence students’ lives and shape the destiny of education. It’s that expectation of being a part of the change happening globally that energises me to move on every morning.
Champion/cheerleader which we should all follow and why?
Zhang Guimei is a true champion of education, particularly for girls in China’s rural regions. As the founder of the Huaping High School for Girls, Zhang has dedicated her life to providing opportunities for impoverished girls who would otherwise be denied an education due to poverty, cultural norms, and gender bias. Her perseverance, resilience, and commitment make her a beacon of hope and an inspirational figure in the global education space.
Best international ed conference and why
CACIE (China Annual Conference for International Education) is, in my opinion, one of the best conferences on international education. With an emphasis on China’s role in global education, it provides a distinctive forum for talking about and investigating the future of international education.
Thought leaders, legislators, and educators who are influencing education’s future are drawn to the conference, which offers insightful information on the prospects, difficulties, and trends in global cooperation. For anyone who wants to comprehend how the field of global education is changing, this event is crucial.
Worst conference food/beverage experience
A networking lunch with only tiny finger foods – hard to make deals when you’re hungry!
Book or podcast recommendation for others in the sector?
AI Superpowers”by Kai-Fu Lee. The book offers key insights into China’s role in AI development and how the global education sector can use AI to improve accessibility, personalisation, and delivery of education. It’s a must-read for anyone looking to stay ahead of the curve.
Describe a project or initiative you’re currently working on that excites you
Expanding TNE collaborations between Chinese institutions and institutions from other nations is one of the most fascinating topics I’m working on at the moment. The need for high quality, internationally recognised education in China is soaring, and TNE is trending quickly. I’m assisting in the creation of cross-border educational programs that enable students to take advantage of an international curriculum without having to leave their native country by collaborating closely with important stakeholders in China and other nations.
In addition to stretching the limits of global cooperation, this initiative is fascinating because it is establishing a standard for education in a globalised society.
